Last day in Switzerland

Sun 3 September

And what a lovely day - the sun shines!! We don't want to waste it but we can't forego the opportunity of a sleep-in before the long travelling tomorrow (and after the late night!).

Elodie has prepared the platter for breakfast - clever girl!

After a very late breakfast, we take a short drive in two cars (so that Elodie and Sabine can join us) up to Gottschalkenberg which lies high above the Aegeri Valley, surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape, and with a unique panoramic view of the Swiss Alps. There are walks in every direction; and plenty of lycra too!

A change from the petunias, Jenny!

A dog (hunde) bar:

We have a nice hike and coffee plus Zuger Kirschtorte which is a typical Swiss cake that consists of layers of nut-meringue, sponge cake and butter cream and is flavoured with cherry brandy kirschwasser. This is shown with a bottle of the local (non-alcoholic) soft drink, Rivella (made from milk whey!! Weird! But it tastes nice!).

In the afternoon, we join in with the others for the once-a-year local fair.

We walk via the lake which is looking magnificent today.

We try some Magenbrot which is a small, sweet glazed biscuit with ginger and spices. The name of the dish directly translates to "stomach-bread" as it is believed to help improve digestion. This recipe originated in Germany and is usually sold in Christmas markets all over Europe.

We have pizza for dinner and then, back at the market, Gilbert gets a piece of raclette for David to try. He has ticked off his Swiss list now: chocolate, fondue, Swiss Army knife and raclette.

Tomorrow the boys fly home from Zurich and I take the train to Rome to baby-sit Niah.

We spend the remainder of the evening packing - ugh!!

Bye Gilbert, Sabine and Elodie!!
