SAARBURG TO REMICH

Friday 11th

After brekkie, a quick walk again towards Saarburg and back whilst Erika rode in to get some provisions. Then off downstream, back along where we had ridden yesterday.

Turning left where the Saar meets the Moselle near Konz, we set off upstream towards Metz, passing Wasserbillig where we will emerge from our cycling circuit towards the end of the month.

At ten it is time for morning tea.

From here, the west side of the Moselle is Luxembourg and the east is Germany.

Here, David is have a turn at the wheel.

We stop at Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) to fill up with 2000 litres of water, use water for showers and the washing machine (the clothes are now flapping on the line out the back of the boat) plus a walk into the old town centre (vieille ville) where we also visited the champagne house Bernard-Massard (founded in 1921) and bought some of their classic bubbly for (would you believe!) 8.60€ per bottle!!

The town is quiet now as most things close for lunch between 12 and 2. It is very pretty.

Lunch on board then off again - to Remich via the loch at Grevenmacher and another at Stadtbredimus. The hills on both sides of the river are steep and lined with vines.

We arrived at Remich at 5 p.m. We will be here for 2 nights.

Knud had to clean the quay of duck/goose poo before anyone could disembark. Pretty birds, but messy!

Before heading out for the evening, we enjoyed one of the bottles of champagne we had bought and did one of the quizzes from The Weekend Age that I had brought with me for Erika. These will keep us amused in the evenings over the next few days.

Then nice dinner out at Hotel de l'Esplanade just across the road from our quay, including yummy foie gras and very nice local pinot gris; David is enjoying the wheat beer/weißbier instead. Crashed into bed but woken around 3 a.m. by some very noisy late-night revellers. Still awake at 4:30! Arghh!
